Brainfeeding back in 2011

Just about one year ago Brisbane, Australia was treated to a massive night of bass heavy and cutting edge electronica by Brainfeeder's Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer and Australia's own Hermitude. Promoted by Brisbane's Dank Morass crew and put on at The Tivoli, the day's events, which included a Middle Eastern banquet put together by the Bookery Cook and a warehouse after party, were all documented by talented photographer Megun Cullen. Below is the short vid filmed Megun and edited by Bookery Cook documenting that epic day back in Jan 2011. Lets hope Brisbane has more like it in 2012!

Here's a promo vid I made good friend and fellow housemate Jad Dapat aka 8MAN one half of Brisbane based SCIENCE PROJECT and co founder of the Brisbane Based underground electronic and tribal record label - DUB TEMPLE RECORDS.

The vid was made from a stop motion animation I shot a couple years back at uni using cut out / illustrated pieces of paper recorded under a black light. It was then edited further in movie editing programs - Aftereffects & Final Cut.

DEXIAN RACKING

Good friend and Brisbane local Mr Brad Swob (one third of Brisbane's Dank Morass) has just launched a project (culminating in the form of a website) titled DEXIAN RACKING. Mr Swob describes what the project is about and its aims:

"Dexian Racking is a website that will regularly publish mixes of music, short stories, digital art and photography in thematically linked volumes. Submissions are open to anyone and everyone. Each volume starts with a mix of music and an object selected by Mr Swob. Writers are encouraged to submit short/micro stories (600 word limit) loosely inspired by the mix of music and the selected object. Graphic designers, illustrators, photographers and video artists are encouraged to submit work based on the same. All submissions are required by a deadline and the entire volume of work live on the Dexian Racking website shortly thereafter. A new mix and object is posted and the process repeats.

Jah willing, Dexian Racking will be an online hub for original writing, music and art in the stylistic tradition of, say, The X-Files. I only half kid! Other influences on the tones and tales of the Dexian Racking project could come from places like horror films, pulp fiction, murder mysteries, ghost stories, science fiction, film noir, Edgar Allan Poe, gonzo and other, Lynch-esque moody weirdness - with varying degrees of blood and silliness. I’m reluctant to say much more. Keep it dank and go crazy."

Swob's initial mix for volume 1 of DR was extremely dark and extremely atmospheric. I particularly enjoyed hearing tracks taken from David Lynch's masterpiece of a TV series "Twin Peaks". Having only just watched the entire series for the very first time earlier this year, it was inevitable my submission for the Racking was going to be inspired by the peaks. EMULATOR – A classic gaming inspired event. September 19-30, Bleeding Heart Gallery Ann St, Brisbane.

Myself and a whole host of local and interstate artists will be exhibiting works inspired by classic 8bit favorites played between 1980 & 1990. Created exclusively for the show I chose to use a screen-scape taken from the Nintendo classic Double Dragon for digital abstraction. The works previewed below will be exhibited in the form of two A2 sized framed prints and will be for sale at $150 each. As well as an exhibition Emulator will have all sorts of classic gaming related activities and events, such as retro gaming consoles ready to be played with and a mad line up of locally based chip tune musicians and DJs including good friends Potato Masta and Dot.AY

Vadim describes his sound and sonic inspiration:

“The concept of what I want to create is to continue the west african tradition of a Griot but in an urban, contemporary sense. Going back to traditional african beats and translating them into a hip hop context, I believe traditional african drumming is the original “trance” music because back in the day they would play these rythms for days on end and literally get into a trance.” – VJ

Brisbane's Silobeats collective are having a launch party / exhibition for Brisbane's White Palms EP over at Jugglers Art Space in the Fortitude Valley. Musically the line up is chocked full of next level electronic DJ's / musicians including sets by Dank Morass DJ's and a set by one third of Seekae George Nicholas aka Jensen Brewster. Myself and partner in visual grime Mr Archi Lancaster will be providing / mixing visuals for the night so its set to be a big night of electronic sounds and visual stimulus. As well as the music side of things Silo have gotten friends from Strutten.com to curate an art show in the tunnel down the side of Jugglers, featuring work from myself and cats such as Michael Candy, Ken Smith, Laura Perm-Jardin, Yarron Frauenfelder, Amy Commins. If your in Bristown Saturday night, be sure to get along, Jugglers is a great space for both art and parties!

Mapping and cartography have enabled us to better make sense of where we are in the world and in understanding our geographic positioning in relation to everything else on the planet.

This year I'm lucky enough to be apart of the Brisbane Semi-Permanent side show happening Friday August 5th at Shooting Gallery in Spring Hill. The line up of artists is huge (including Aussie man of the minute Mr Lister) and likewise with the idea behind it. Everyone will be remixing artworks made for the Sydney etcc show earlier in the year and artists down in Melbourne will then remix and reinterpret the remixes from Brisbane and so on and so on. Curated by local Brisbane artist Ben Reeve this show raises important questions about how we perceive copyright in the visual art industry, much like how assumptions surrounding the appropriation of other peoples work have been experimented with in electronic music production through sampling.

Gateway2 - Digital Collage - 2011

In a couple of weeks time (Weds 3rd Aug) I'm having my first ever solo show at BREW which is located in the heart of Brisbane's CBD down the Burnett Lane lane way. For their second ever show, BREW have teamed up the recently established Shooting Gallery based over in Spring Hill to curate a selection of 10 large A1 sized prints exhibited with a limited edition run of 1-5. They'll be a mixture of older previously un-exhibited works as well as a number of brand new works hot off the press. For more info check out the FB event page. The show will be up for a solid three weeks, so if you can't make the opening night, be sure to pop down, have a coffee, stiff drink or a bite to eat and check it out.

Library Hack 2011

I recently facilitated a few workshops over at The EDGE for this years Libary Hack project. Library Hack is a collaborative effort between the State Libary of Queensland and The EDGE to get people engaged in remixing and mashing together old archived SLQ Libary content to create new contemporary outcomes. There are a number of data sets / content people can mash together, from using the convict records data to create an interactive app to hundreds of previously copyrighted images from Picture Queensland you can use to mash together and remix into the 21st century. My job as a facilitator was to run workshops teaching people some basic photo editing techniques in Photoshop, running through a few of my own mashup's as an example. Participants where then encouraged to create there own photo mashup's using any number of the great images released by Picture Queensland and a number of other Interstate Libraries and enter it into the Library Hack competition where big cash prizes can be one. This weekend extravaganza of all things creative will feature emerging artists, performers and musicians from both Brisbane & interstate. Now in its 17th 2high festival is Australia's one-of-a-kind multi-arts experience for young emerging artists and cultural producers. I shall be exhibiting for the first time a series of my recent works in their original form via digital projection. The chosen works will be from the ongoing series titled "digitalscapelands". This Friday (1st Oct) see's the launch of Brisbane's BARI festival (Brisbane Artist Run Initiative). All across inner Brisbane 12 different artist run galleries will open their doors for the whole month of October too showcase a huge selection of works by both emerging and more established creative peoples. Myself and 32 others will be hanging works on the wall over at Jugglers Art space located in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley. Doors open at 6 and close around midnight this. Cheap beer / wine prices are very likely. Get down, check it out and if your feeling loose enough buy a lovely piece of artwork. Your walls will appreciate it and so will our pockets!

One of the coolest pieces of memorabilia I brought back from Japan were some stickers that I purchased in this massive, multistory art supply shop in downtown Shinjuku. The orange face looking ones are apparently symbols for yen, whilst my mate Hayato informed me that the text ones mean "crazy low price", or something along those lines. Anyway bringing these stickers back and pasting them around the place inspired me make a few new stickers again drawing the weird little characters I used to reguarly draw.

The EDGE digital art gallery

The EDGE recently printed 6 digital works of mine to be displayed in their digital art gallery. Each at A2 size the prints have been framed and will be on display for about a month or so and then stored in the Queensland State Library archive, which is pretty fucking cool. If you haven't already, and are in the Southbank area, pop into the EDGE and check the place out. Have a wander around and check out the facilities. Not only is it a great resource for those interested in digital media, but there's even a little coffee shop on the premises. Score.

This coming Friday (2nd) see's the opening of Desperate Spaces curated by Brisbane based artist and curator Megan Cope. The exhibition which features over 50 emerging artists will be a fundraiser for Artworkers Alliance with all works being sold for under 100 clams. Bargin! Each participating artist was sent a party pack full of bits of material and found imagery to then use to make an artwork especially for the show. it was completely up to them how they used the
materials so I decided to scan in each piece and create a A4 sized digital print. The above image is the finnal product on screen, but if you want a chance to check it out in the flesh along with over 50 amazing one off works, then get down to the PS Gallery (Old Kiln Gallery) 150 Enoggera Tce, Paddington on Friday for what will be a great show!

Vegas Spray

Vegas Spray is an online gallery dedicated to showcasing emerging artists in Brisbane as well as the world over. Started last year by emerging curator and artist Travis Dewan, it has presented a number of online exhibitions which have bought to light the different ways in which emerging artists go about there practice and the conceptual themes they investigate.

Earlier this year also saw Vegas Spray's first actual gallery Exhibition held at the White Canvas gallery in Brisbane's fortitude valley. Titled BEAF (brisbane emerging art festival) the exhibition featured artwork from numerous emerging artists based in Brisbane, ranging in a variety of media, as well as live music from local talent such as a dj set by Dank Morass's "Walrii". The night had a great turn out with artworks being sold as well as cheap cheap drinks, so everyone had a fun time! BEAF will be an anual event, so if your in town keep your eyes open for dates and head on down.

Myself and three other lucky people where given the chance to have one of our works blown up and printed on a large scale (roughly 3metres) and be displayed on a light box in the middle of King George square in Brisbane as part of the up and coming youth week in Australia. The idea for the project was masterminded by two local Brisbane ladies Breannen Stanbridge and Jess Rankin who have recently formed a proactive initiative designed to offer temporary public art opportunities for emerging local artists, without the usual concerns associated with building a permanent installation. Public Realm was founded at university by their mutual love for visual art and their desire to support young artists and get stuff done. So keep your eyes and ears peeled for up and coming projects in Brisbane for the year 2010!

As above mentioned they're debut project will be on show in Brisbane's king George square from 10th - 18th of this month, so if you're in town during this period be sure to go check King George get spiced up by some local artistic talent! My breder Isaac aka Walrii aka the Walrus of Brisbane's Dank Morass fame, has put together volume 1 of the ten-p-bag mixes which shall now and again be posted up. For vol.1 the walrus has assembled an ecletic 30 minute mix of beats that are as equally drenched in soul as they are in galatic sounds. No serato at hand so these beats come straight from the walrus's crate. A bit rough around the edges but dope as always!
